Do I need a work permit?

If you're not an EU or EEA national, you're subject to immigration control and must obtain a work permit before taking up employment in the UK, unless you belong to one of the categories of people for which this isn't necessary.

These include:
  • ministers of religion;
  • representatives of overseas newspapers, news agencies and broadcasting organisations;
  • private servants of diplomatic staff;
  • sole representatives of overseas firms;
  • teachers and language assistants under approved exchange schemes;
  • employees of an overseas government or international organisation;
  • seamen under contract to join a ship in British waters;
  • operational ground staff of overseas-owned airlines;
  • seasonal workers at agricultural camps under approved schemes;
  • doctors and dentists in postgraduate training;
  • business visitors admitted by the Home Office;
  • Commonwealth citizens with the right of abode and those with at least one grandparent born in the UK.
