More than half of adults in the UK don't have a will setting out exactly what they would like to happen to their assets once they pass away.
New research by Unbiased.co.uk and Certainty.co.uk, reported by Money Marketing, has found that 58 per cent of people in the country don't have a will in place. The websites surveyed 2,000 individuals before coming to such a conclusion.
Of particular concern is the fact that the proportion of older people without a will has risen since 2009, meaning some people could die without one if they don't act quickly.
The statistics show that while 41 per cent of people aged between 50 and 59 didn't have a will in 2009, this figure has now increased to 54 per cent. In the same time, the proportion of those aged 40 to 49 with no will has surged from 60 per cent to 69 per cent.
In fact, the only age bracket in which the number without a will drawn up has decreased in the last four years is 20- to 29-year-olds. Despite this, the figure still stands at 83 per cent of the population who have yet to make their wishes known.
Karen Barrett, chief executive of Unbiased.co.uk, said: 'There are still a staggering amount of people without a will. In fact, this year's data shows the number of 35- to 54-year-olds without a will has risen from 64 per cent to 68 per cent, leaving them and their family in a vulnerable position. Too few people are aware of the security a will offers and too many believe that it should be written when they are older."
She added that the results of the research are just as worrying now as they were when the study was conducted in 2009.
