Many consumers have found themselves falling victim to unregulated operators when making a will, a report by the Legal Ombudsman has established.
Chief ombudsman for England and Wales Adam Sampson explained that some people are paying out large amounts of money, but their documents may not be valid.
He explained: "One service which crops up a lot is will writing. It's a service carried out often by will-writing firms who aren't regulated.
"Because of this, customers are left with little means of redress when things go wrong."
Mr Sampson used the example of one man, known simply as Mr F, who had been directed to an individual in an adjoining office to his local solicitor to have his will written.
At a later stage, it was found that the document was defective, but Mr F was informed by the firm's senior partner that the will writer was affiliated to a linked but unregulated firm.
