Woman wins increased divorce payout of £8m
A woman has won an £8 million divorce settlement after arguing in the Court of Appeal that the previous payout was too low.
Victoria Jones was married to oil tycoon Gareth Jones for ten years and was initially awarded a sum of £5.5 million.
However, after taking the case to court, three judges ascertained that the value of the assets accrued during the marriage stood at £16 million and that Mrs Jones should be awarded half.
Sir Nicholas Wall, the president of the High Court Family Division, suggested in an interview with the Independent
that these sums of money are often incomprehensible to many people.
"The application of the so-called "sharing" and "needs" principles may look very different in cases where the latter predominates and the parties' assets are a tiny percentage of those encountered here," he commented.
Latest available statistics show that the divorce rate stood at 11.2 divorcing people per 1,000 of the married population.
