Are retirees bringing up the divorce rate?
There could be a rising trend for married retirees to file for divorce.
In an article in the Times
, Helen Rumbelow questioned why pensioners are increasingly seeking divorce so late in life.
According to the latest Office of National Statistics figures from 2008, the divorce rate is at its lowest rate in 29 years.
However, people over 60 are beginning to feel the need to part company, as the figures also showed that the divorce rate is dropping in every age group except the over-60s.
Son of elderly divorced parents, Andrew Smith, told the newspaper that old age should be the time when couples need each other most.
However, he added: "There is also an intolerance that comes with age.
"A lot of people of their age lead increasingly separate lives - separate bedrooms and so on. But they needed more."
Last week ex-vice president and presidential candidate Al Gore announced his divorce from his wife of 40 years Tipper and last year the world's oldest divorcees, Bertie and Jessie Woods, were 98 years old when they separated.
