Ex-vice president files for divorce
Ex-vice president Al Gore has filed for divorce from his wife of 40 years.
Mr Gore, who ran for the presidency against George Bush in 2000, announced his separation from wife Tipper in an email to friends and colleagues.
The email read: "We are announcing today that after a great deal of thought and discussion, we have decided to separate.
"This is very much a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration."
Having quit politics after his election run, Mr Gore has had a successful career championing environmental issues.
His documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, which featured the influential figure lecturing the public on the effects of global warming, won an Academy Award for Documentary Feature in 2007.
It has been reported by friends of the couple, who married in 1970, that they had grown apart.
During the election campaign the couple had been teased by the media for their overt displays of public affection for each other.
