Getting over divorce 'takes 18 months'

It takes an average of 18 months for someone to get over a divorce, according to a new survey by dating website fifties.com.

The research showed that the typical divorcee feels ready to move on after 17 months and 26 days of separating from their spouse.

Many of those questioned said it also took this long to resolve issues such as child custody and property ownership.

Opting for a DIY divorce could speed up the process, particularly if the split is amicable and both sides agree on how assets should be split.

According to the survey, some 43 per cent of divorcees felt relieved once their decree absolute came through, suggesting that the quicker this happens, the sooner divorced couples can get on with their lives.

The latest government statistics show that the divorce rate in England and Wales fell in 2008 to 11.2 per 1,000 married people, down from 11.8 in 2007.
