Right to appeal granted in divorce case
Three judges have decided that a woman has the right to appeal against a ruling that she must pay her ex-husband £5 million due to the financial difficulties he fell into after their divorce.
Elena Bowes Marano separated from Peter Marano in 2007, with their multi-million pound fortune being divided equally.
However, when a large investment made by Mr Marano was hit by the credit crunch and he found himself with £10 million of negative equity, presiding judge Mrs Justice King ruled that Ms Marano should pay him back a sum of £5 million.
Lord Justice Thorpe, who was among the judges granting the right to appeal this week, said that "justice requires" the case be heard, although he did have "some hesitation" in making the deicison.
According to the Daily Mail
, if Ms Marano is successful, the case "could have far-reaching consequences" for future big money divorces.
It is estimated that both parties have spent roughly seven-figure sums fighting the case so far. Those looking to get divorced for a much cheaper amount can try a DIY divorce
