According to NBC Los Angeles, rising unemployment figures, fixed salaries and a fall in the value of homes means many people are finding the cost of splitting up to be too expensive.
Similarly, many couples could also be coming much more financially dependant on each other.
Pamela Smock, a researcher at the Population Studies Centre at the University of Michigan, said: "Anything of this magnitude that's going to affect millions of people does not bode well for all sorts of families.
"It could keep unhappy couples together," she added.
Last week it was announced that Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone and his wife Slavica are to divorce after 24 years of marriage.
