Executors may encounter problems with banks

by Sarah Ashcroft

People who have been granted executor duties will not necessarily be given a smooth ride when it comes to dealing with banks, as one person's plight has shown.

A Guardian reader explained how they went to Santander with details of their father's estate, as they were the sole executor and had obtained probate.

Despite being told he would receive a bereavement pack on a number of occasions, the assistance he required was never received.

A number of documents sent to the bank could not be located, including a death certificate, identification and details of probate.

The following day, he was contacted by Santander to say the information had been found, but the cheque of the money kept in the accounts was still not received.

It is therefore not possible for the accounts for the deceased's estate to be completed until the funds have been released.
