Banks urged to acknowledge Power of Attorney
by Daniel Jones
People who have been granted Lasting Power of Attorney
often experience problems when it comes to taking over their loved one's finances.
Paul King, a London-based photographer, was the registered attorney for his mother's financial affairs, but has found it hard for banks to accept him in this role.
He has been written to on three occasions by Halifax at his mother's address, the BBC reveals, but did not receive any of the letters.
Furthermore, Santander acknowledged that he had power of attorney
, but then sent an online banking application to his mother's address.
''I found parts of the document, with the PIN missing so now I can't access her account and have to start over again," he told the news provider.
Anyone considering granting an individual with a Lasting Power of Attorney
is advised that the status cannot be used until it has been registered with the Office of the Public Guardian.
