This book examines the legal pros and cons of marriage and cohabitation, without making any moral judgement on how couples choose to live together. Marriage fundamentally changes partners' legal rights and obligations; and if you live together unmarried, you may be surprised to learn how little protection the law provides.

Written by two family law experts, this topical guide provides a thought-provoking analysis of how the law treats married and unmarried couples differently when it comes to children, ownership of the home, social security, tax and finances, relationship breakdown, Wills, and other important issues.

Valid in England & Wales only.

About the Author

Richard Collins and Tanya Roberts are both solicitors at Charles Russell Solicitors in London.

Richard is a mature entrant to family law, having first worked in advertising for Saatchi & Saatchi and other agencies. He has extensive experience of dealing with the financial consequences of the breakdown of relationships, often with an international element, and cases involving disputes about children, cohabitation issues, pre-nuptial agreements and issues relating to the unmarried family.

Tanya's practice includes financial and children-related cases, both domestic and international. She is on the Lord Chancellor's Panel of Solicitors for child abduction work and has, with two others, written a book on the subject called 'International Child Abduction'.
