Olympic room renters urged to consider scheme
Anyone drawing up lodger agreements
to rent out rooms during the 2012 Olympics should consider taking advantage of a government scheme, HM HM Revenue & Customs has said.
The initiative pays out up to £4,250 a year tax-free to anyone who rents out a furnished room within a residential property.
Known as the Rent a Room Scheme
, it does not apply to a property that has been separated into flats that are consequently rented out, or unfurnished residences.
However, those who let a floor or an entire room of their home are eligible, providing the lodger pays, with meals perhaps occasionally provided.
Aviva recently warned landlords of the problems encountered by tenants who grow cannabis in their properties, which can lead to all sorts of damage being caused.
It revealed that between 2008/09 and 2009/10, there was an 18 per cent increase in the number of cannabis plants seized by authorities.
