Keep things neutral when selling your own home

DIY house selling can be made much easier with a few simple changes to a property, one expert has suggested.

However, any home improvements need to be done sensibly, emphasised editor at Build It magazine Anna-Marie DeSouza, otherwise homeowners risk making their properties less attractive.

For example, when redecorating spaces, it is essential to keep neutral colours in mind and to avoid injecting too much personality that may put off potential buyers, she noted.

The expert highlighted that some of the favourite improvements of the moment include extensions and loft conversions.

"As long as you don't go overboard with your budget, creating this extra space will add to your home's resale value as well as provide you with more pleasurable living and storage space," Ms DeSouza explained.

Lloyds TSB recently revealed that over the course of 2010, the number of sales of properties worth £1 million increased considerably.
