Buy-to-let: Get a survey before you buy

Property investors in the UK could find that getting a survey before they move could help them negotiate a better deal in order to expand their portfolios.

A report from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) has found that the average cost of unexpected repairs to a property can rack up to £1,818.

Some 58 per cent of buyers are unsure of what they are looking at when it comes to contracts – many do not see vital information on a property before they buy.

A detailed survey can provide extensive information on long-term problems such as damp and structural movements.

Commenting on the findings, the residential director for Rics David Dalby said: "A survey not only gives you a price valuation, but also a detailed report of the state of the property.

"Armed with this information you are in a much stronger position to decide whether to proceed with the purchase, or negotiate a better deal."
