DIY house sellers encouraged by house prices?

DIY house sellers might be encouraged by the news that house prices have risen slightly in April from March.

Data from the Land Registry's House Price Index revealed that the cost of a house in the UK rose by 0.2 per cent on the month and increased by an average of 8.5 per cent on last year.

Now, the average property price is £165,596 and April marks the sixth month in a row in which the figure has been positive.

People selling their home in London will welcome the news the most, as annual figures have risen 14.8 per cent, while those in Yorkshire and Humberside have seen just a 0.7 per cent annual rise.

However, homeowners in the north-east saw the biggest monthly rise, of 3.1 per cent, which could signal further growth in the region.

The housing market is showing signs of recovery as according to Bank of England figures, mortgage lending rose in April compared with the previous month by 2 per cent.
