Sellers save thousands by avoiding estate agents

Homeowners can save thousands of pounds by not involving an estate agent in the sale of their property, it has been suggested.

According to property website Briffy.com, by advertising online sellers can avoid estate agent fees.

In addition, founder of the site David Amstell noted that such a method protects against the possibility that the agent is playing the parties against each other.

"Having been one many years ago I know all of the tricks that go on - you don't necessarily work in the best interests of the vendor of the property because you are trying to make a deal," he said.

Rightmove's latest house price index found that the average price for a home has fallen by nearly five per cent over the last year - now at £229,691.

It followed findings by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors that the average number of properties being sold by surveyors in the three months up to September was at its lowest point in the 30 years since the survey began.
