A growth in the rental market means more tenants need to be aware of their tenant rights, according to a personal finance website.
Fool.co.uk has released a series of tips designed to help tenants know their rights when it comes to their home
.The information includes being aware of the legal acts designed to protect assured shorthold tenants, such as a landlord's inability to remove a tenant before the end of their contract unless they convince a court the tenant has misbehaved.
Other tips include knowing that a landlord is responsible for the safety and maintenance of gas and electricity and the exterior of the property, as well as ensuring that furniture is fireproof.
It also advises tenants who have paid deposits after April 7th 2007 to ensure that their landlords have used a tenancy deposit protection scheme.
The tenancy deposit protection scheme is a government project designed to help solve landlord and tenant disputes over deposits.
