Landlords told to promote electrical safety

by Daniel Jones

Electrical safety needs to be considered as part of a landlord's fire risk assessment template, one expert has suggested.

Cherry Read, head of communications and campaigns at the Electrical Safety Council, emphasised that many properties may have poor safety records.

"Around 80 per cent of people think there should be a duty on landlords to do an electrical check on the installation," she explained.

Ms Read highlighted that landlords already have a legal obligation to check the gas safety of their properties, but there is no such legislation in place for electricity.

"There are far fewer deaths and injuries from gas than from electricity," the expert noted.

Earlier this year, a new service was launched by the Gas Safe Register that enables people to check whether an engineer is registered by sending a text message.

The customer is asked to text the word gas and the business registration number to 85080.
