Bristol 'is best place to live in the UK'

Bristol has been named as the city with the highest quality of life of all the major destinations in the UK.

A new study by MoneySuperMarket has revealed the West Country city offers the most desirable lifestyle, ahead of Edinburgh which finished second with London a distant seventh.

The Quality of Living Index assessed the standards in the 12 largest cities in the country and concluded that Bristol is the best of all. One factor was the average salary in the city of £22,293, putting it ahead of the nationwide average of £21,473.

It meant Bristol was third out of the 12 cities in terms of average salary, while it also offers the highest disposable income growth and a low unemployment rate of eight per cent. All of these combine to make it a satisfying place to live.

Edinburgh also performed well in the study, with its average salary of £24,628 proving to be the second highest in the table and its unemployment rate of 6.8 per cent noted as the lowest anywhere in the country.

Clare Francis, editor-in-chief at MoneySuperMarket, said: "The UK is only just making its way out of the deepest recession it has seen since the 1930s and it's clear that people living in different cities across the country have had to face different problems. It is interesting to see Bristol and Edinburgh topping the table of the best places to live in the UK from a quality of living perspective."

Cardiff, Liverpool and Leeds rounded off the top five, with Bradford finishing bottom of the list.

The findings could give renters a good idea of where it might be wise to set up home and landlords some clues regarding the best places rent out accommodation.

At the bottom of the table, other cities to struggle in the Quality of Living Index along with Bradford included Sheffield, Birmingham and Glasgow.ADNFCR-1645-ID-801653037-ADNFCR
