Sunderland landlords promise rise in quality

The people of Sunderland have been assured they will soon be in a position to choose from higher quality accommodation when selecting a rented home, after a number of landlords in the city opted to join a voluntary scheme aimed at improving the state of properties.
Some 20 landlords have already signed up to the Accredited Landlords Scheme, which is being run by Sunderland City Council, reports the Sunderland Echo. In order to gain a place on the initiative, property owners must display their credentials, such as showing they are a fit and proper person and that their homes are of the necessary standard.
Experts from the council's housing and neighbourhood renewal team will be on hand to check out the abodes offered by those who want to take part.
Councillor Graeme Miller, cabinet member for housing, said: "Private landlords offer 14,000 homes to families in Sunderland, so it is important that the council and landlords work together to ensure private rented accommodation is as good as it can be.
"We want to help landlords maintain and manage properties and attract tenants, help tenants by ensuring high standards of accommodation, and help communities by providing a high quality rental sector where they live."
Landlords also stand to gain significantly from the scheme, as they will be offered financial help, discounts on various services and free tenant vetting. This can help them ensure they end up with the perfect person or family to rent their home.
But ultimately, the most important news is that all of the landlords who sign up to the project will be displaying their determination to ensure their properties meet the required standard. This can only be good news for all those people looking for somewhere to live in Sunderland.
Phil Brazier, who was one of the first signatories on the scheme, said he believes it is a vital way to help landlords focus on the quality of accommodation they are offering.
