Process of evicting tenants 'must be improved'

by Sarah Ashcroft

Improvements to the eviction process are being called for, after one man spent months pursuing court action to repossess his property in Darlington.

Glenn Schofield waited for an eviction order to be granted by the courts, during which time his tenants had practically vandalised his property beyond repair.

Damage included carpets being pulled up, kitchen units being ripped out, the toilet being blocked and paint being splashed all over the walls.

Mr Schofield said he had followed all the correct procedures down to the letter, but failed to understand why the granting of the court order took so long.

"I don't know how much it's going to cost to repair and I don't even know yet whether the insurance company will pay out for it," he commented.

Destruction to the four-bedroomed house has been deemed so severe that it has been reported as criminal damage to the police.
