Pressure on household finances is growing, as the latest figures show that inflation stood at four per cent last month.
Director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com Ann Robinson commented: "These figures could be a cruel and costly combination for households, many of whom are already struggling to stay afloat in these stormy economic times."
She emphasised that data is expected to show that wages have increased by just two per cent, showing that the cost of living is increasingly becoming disproportionate.
Ms Robinson indicated that for some people, racking up debt is likely to be the only way they can foot their monthly outgoings.
