Shop leases 'not always easy' in town centres
by Sarah Ashcroft
Establishing shop lease agreements
in town and city centres may not always be as easy as first thought, an expert has identified.
There are a number of benefits to occupying an out-of-town location rather than somewhere on the high street, suggested Matthew Hopkinson, director at the Local Data Company.
He continued: "A lot of the multiple retailers want larger space and they want ease of access - the logistics of the parking – to support their multi-channel offer."
Mr Hopkinson revealed that there are various aspects that make it hard to let retail space in the centre of town, although these will vary quite considerably depending on where in the country it is.
BDO figures reveal that mid-market retailers have seen an overall year-on-year sales decline of 2.2 per cent, making August the worst month for like-for-like sales in two years.
All sectors covered by the survey experienced a drop in sales in the four weeks leading up to August 28th.
