Divorce costs separating couples in the UK, on average, a staggering £28,000 to make the break. A new survey by Norwich Union has revealed that rising costs in divorce have left those separating from their spouses, using their hard -earned savings for funding. The survey illlustrates that aside from the emotional trauma, divorce is a huge financial strain, costing separating couples a collective £4.3 billion in the UK.
Financing divorce through the sale of the marital home appears to have gone out of fashion, with more couples resorting to their savings to fund their divorce. In response to this trend, Divorce Online has reported a 50% increase in popularity for pre-nuptial agreements in 2006. Mark Keenan of Divorce Online comments, 'With the costs associated with divorce soaring, it is a sensible and inexpensive way for couples to ensure that if they do divorce, their wishes prior to marriage have been recorded and have to be taken into account by the divorce court.'
Despite this sorry state of affairs, marriage still remains on the cards for most, with nearly half of Norwich Union respondents not ruling out remarrying. Could it be that there's still a sweet taste to the bitter pill of divorce?
