Businesses benefit from new patent rights
The need for business advice
may soon grow among firms, as new legislation comes into force to improve their access to justice over their patent and design rights.
A damages cap of £500,000 is being imposed on claims made in the Patents County Court, which should help firms pursuing damages less than this amount to avoid going to the High Court.
Minister for intellectual property Baroness Wilcox said: "By making it easier for small firms and entrepreneurs to use the legal processes it will give them more time to concentrate on business activities."
She added that the legislation should help give businesses the confidence they need to innovate, while also providing clarity of the legal processes involved.
Stuart Curtis, head of commercial business insurance at Lloyds TSB Insurance, recently revealed that since the end of the recession, there has been a rise in the number of people starting their own businesses.
