Firms need protection against disputes

Small companies all over the UK need greater protection against legal action taken by employees, one group has emphasised.

The Forum of Private Business (FPB) revealed that there are around 1.9 million instances of workers taking employment law advice in workplace disputes every year.

After questioning its members, the FPB found that 92 per cent support giving judges greater powers to eliminate weak cases, while 86 per cent believe in raising the deposit and costs limits for certain claims.

"We are currently in a situation where employment legislation designed to benefit employees can be a real barrier to creating employment, and favours individual workers at the expense of the rest of the workforce," commented FPB chief executive Phil Orford.

Research from the Citizens Advice Bureau recently found that some employers are not giving workers the holiday allowance they are legally entitled to, especially in low-paid jobs.
