Health and safety issues 'often ignored'

Employers need to realise how important it is to take health and safety issues seriously, an expert has claimed.

By failing to keep workers safe, businesses are in breach of the health and safety act, which may encourage staff to seek employment law advice.

Roger Bibbings, occupational safety adviser at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, explained that there are so many safety issues that need to be addressed in workplaces.

"Road risk, ergonomics, stress, skin health, noise and vibration, fire - just about every conceivable hazard is often overlooked," he continued.

Mr Bibbings highlighted that directors are not taking the lead when it comes to safety concerns and do not access the business advice they need to stay compliant with the law.

It was recently announced that the Health and Safety Executive will reduce the number of on-the-spot inspections it carries out amid cuts to its budget.
