Unemployment rise continues

Unemployment has continued to rise, government figures revealed yesterday.

Data from the Office for National Statistics showed that the number of people out of work rose from 2.03 million to 2.1 million in March.

The claimant count rose in the same period by 73,700 to 1.46 million.

Such a situation suggests that the number of redundancies is continuing to rise.

Those running a business who may have to let staff go could benefit from picking up a legal pack on business management in this area, as failure to follow procedures correctly could lead to legal claims such as unfair dismissal.

Such errors could include not consulting correctly, failure to consider alternative measures such as reduced hours or discriminatory choices over who will go.

Chancellor of the exchequer Alistair Darling announced new measures in the Budget to help loss-making businesses by letting them reclaim taxes on profits made in the last three years.
