The UK unemployment rate is on course to exceed three million, it has been stated.
A survey by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has warned of a bleak situation in the manufacturing sector and continued decline in services, although the rate of downturn in the latter sector is slowing.
This will lead to the jobless total hitting 3.2 million in 2010, the body predicted.
BCC director general David Frost called for government action, stating: "To limit the upsurge in the jobless total, it is vital to slash the regulatory burden on business."
The latest government figures put the unemployed total at 2.03 million.
