Sales and marketing 'essential' to businesses

Anyone running their own business may be interested to hear some advice on how to weather the recession.

According to the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), firms should not abandon their sales and marketing while they are busy drawing up stock transfer forms or a new employment contract.

Instead they should focus on this and their customer service as they are likely to struggle if they do not look after their consumers.

John Dunsmure, managing director of the BCC, said businesses should "look at your business plan, identify whether you are on the right track or not, if you have to change and diversify, be cautious about it".

In a list of top five business tips for those running their own company, Mr Dunsmure also suggests managing cash flow effectively and making good use of technology are essential for business success.
