Consultation 'vital' before redundancy

Those running a business must carry out consultations with staff before making any redundancies, it has been stated.

Employment lawyer Julian Golding wrote in MT Expert that "by far and away" the most common cause of legal actions against employers is when there has not been enough consultation and structured decision making on the issue.

He said that consulting with staff provides not just information but a chance to discuss alternative measures to redundancy.

So far the private sector has borne the brunt of the job losses in the recession as industries such as car-making, the print media and the financial sector have suffered losses.

However, the public sector will soon find it is the focus of cuts and job losses, the Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service predicted last week.
