In response to one Liverpool letting agent's decision to erect signs outside the homes of those failing to make payments, the National Landlords Association (NLA) has condemned the practice.
According to the body, landlords should follow the correct legal procedure and seek possession of the property instead, as naming and shaming is "almost certainly illegal".
"While we understand the threat to both landlords and letting agents of tenants failing to keep up with their rental payments, this form of public humiliation is a recipe for disaster," said NLA spokesman Simon Gordon.
Last week Neil Heffey - a partner at Sutton Estates, the firm that erected "Rent Dodger Lives Here" signs - explained that the tactic was only used in cases where the tenant is not experiencing genuine financial difficulty.
