A new study has revealed that many baby boomers have relatively modest ambitions for their retirement years.

The Economic and Social Research Council found that while many have substantial projects in mind, lots of people have goals on a much smaller scale.

For example, some respondents said they want to spend their post-working life engaging in relaxing activities, such as listening to music and going for walks.

By contrast, others expressed a desire for more grand activities such as travelling abroad and using a second home.

Commenting on the findings, Dr Rebecca Leach said they "provide only limited evidence that first wave boomers are developing new third age lifestyles.”

She added that it shows the assumption that people of this age group are "spending the kids' inheritance" is not necessarily true.

The study also stated that the first wave of the baby boom generation - people born between 1945 and 1954 - represent nearly a fifth of the British population.

This comes after research by Efalex Active 50+ found that people aged over 50 believe they are fitter than their parents were when they reached the same landmark.
